Letter from the Commander

Tom

Founded in 1869 on the values of Love, Truth, and Honor, Sigma Nu is a Fraternity unlike any other. With an unparalleled tradition and a membership exceeding 200,000, Sigma Nu is respected on an international basis for its ability to develop young men into ethical leaders.

Here at the University of California Irvine, Sigma Nu Fraternity offers an incredible experience that is unmatched by any other Fraternity or organization on campus. I realize that for both incoming and continuing students the opportunity of Fraternity presents a difficult decision due in no small part to the frenzied atmosphere of a new school year and the uncertainty of the commitment that lies in front of you. I hope that this message and website can aid you in your decision because it is certainly one of the most important you will ever make.

First and foremost, Sigma Nu prides itself on brotherhood above all else. I absolutely stand behind the idea that we are the closest group of individuals that you will find at here at UCI. Sigma Nu has developed a unique network of friends and brothers that enjoy being around each other, but will also not hesitate to go any distance for a brother in need.

For those men invited to become a part of Sigma Nu, you will enjoy an incredible list of benefits beyond brotherhood that will aid you personally, academically, financially, and socially.

Personal Development

Our pledge program is designed to help students to quickly acclimate to college life. In the process of earning your membership into Sigma Nu, you will build close relationships with the members of our fraternity as well as your pledge class. You will complete the multi-million dollar LEAD program designed by Sigma Nu and meant to aid in specific aspects of your personal development like project management, teamwork, and leadership. Also, as an organization with an eye on growth, Sigma Nu has a distinct ability to place its members in leadership roles early on. As the former Treasurer and current President of Sigma Nu, I can attest to the importance of the skills learned and experience established when it comes time to interview for a job or apply for graduate school.

Academics

Quite simply, Sigma Nu expects academic success from its members. We have consistently been a top academic performer in the Greek system and were recognized for our inclusive scholarship program in 2005. Academically you will have an unmatched level of resources from which to draw including: 1) advice and guidance from students who have succeeded in the very same classes you are taking; 2) the opportunity to enroll in tutoring groups known as LARC that will be subsidized by Sigma Nu; 3) exposure to graduate school information provided by field professionals from Kaplan; 4) exposure to academic and employment resources provided by the UCI Career Center 5) inclusion in chapter wide study hours aimed at providing academic assistance between brothers and guaranteeing a minimum amount of study time per week.

Financial

With close to 250 active alumni, the UC Irvine Chapter of Sigma Nu acts as a remarkable job network. From part-time positions (both on and off campus) for those seeking additional income during school to career opportunities upon graduation, Sigma Nu provides opportunities that your fellow students and even fellow fraternity members will never have. In addition to employment opportunities, Sigma Nu offers a scholarship program designated specifically to aid students that are invited to join our pledge program. $500 is distributed annually within our fall pledge class to help with the costs of school and fraternity.

Social

While I encourage you to evaluate Sigma Nu on the wide range of benefits that it offers, I would be amiss if I told you not to consider the social aspects of Fraternity. Sigma Nu offers immediate access to the sometimes hidden social scene of UC Irvine. With a house in Newport Beach, multiple exchanges with sororities each quarter, and a formal event held once per quarter, you will find it quite easy to forget those old high school festivities. Above all, our annual White Rose Formal in Palm Springs is a weekend that is known by many at UC Irvine.

Sports

A separate but equally entertaining part of the social experience offered by Sigma Nu is the opportunity to play sports and compete. While Sigma Nu has been awarded annually for our sportsmanship on the field, we expect to win each and every sporting event we play. Two major sports are played each quarter including Inter-Fraternity Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Softball, and Hockey. Currently, Sigma Nu is the reigning basketball champion and is one year removed from a championship in football.

Hazing

As a final note, I would like inform and remind any interested student that Sigma Nu was founded against hazing in 1869 and we continue to stand by that principle today. Any person who accepts an invitation to join our Fraternity will receive the same respect as would be given a brother. Put simply, we do not haze.

Best of luck on your decision,
Thomas Lydick, Eminent Commander #271
